- Artist: Lou Reed & Metallica
- Song: “Brandenburg Gate”
- Album: Lulu
- Genre: WTF
The collaboration between Lou Reed and Metallica’s status as an ambitious train wreck is pretty much confirmed at this point. The album’s opener, “Brandenburg Gate”, actually starts off in a manner that shows promise, as Lou Reed’s lyrics have a haunting quality to them as they evoke mutilation and classic horror cinema. Too bad James Hetfield’s crooning and the unfocused noise that follows pretty much ventilates that promise with a shotgun-blast to the face. Reed says this is the best record he’s ever done, so either he’s losing it, or he’s working on a level I can’t comprehend. To Metallica fans, it’s another misstep for the band, albeit a bizarre and inspired one for once. For Lou Reed fans, it’s an oddity that’ll find it’s way next to Metal Machine Music on the shelf of strange.
